How to Design a Timeless Space

Considering renovating your late 1990s bathroom with a design you just discovered on Pinterest? Or perhaps you have your heart set on giving your kitchen cabinets a stunning forest-green makeover or updating all of your furnishings to a more art-deco style?

The newest house trend can disappear rapidly, so keep that in mind if you're planning to invest time and money in remodeling or even just upgrading your décor. Designing a room that won't make you cringe in five, ten, or even twenty years is essential since, like fashion, home trends come and go.

The secret is to use a variety of styles, choose specific looks that stand the test of time and go well with one another, and organise these components before you start.

When renovating, it's crucial to consider the long term due to the high price of labour and construction materials, as well as the property itself. However, this does not imply that your design choices must be uninteresting. Simply choose those elements carefully and cunningly that you wish to be the heroes of the space.

Consider adopting a trend you truly like using interchangeable furnishings like feature walls, wallpaper, and finishing touches like carpets, pillows, window coverings, or artwork. It's important to exercise caution while designing and planning large-scale products and places, such as the kitchen or bathroom, and choosing which design aspects to invest in. For instance, a kitchen benchtop would be considered a significant investment in these places, as opposed to splash-backs, which can be viewed as interchangeable features.

Additionally, spending a bit extra up front can make updating easier in the future. If you hire a joiner to create your kitchen cabinetry and paint it, you can easily change the colour over time. However, if you purchase a laminate kitchen, it’s not recommended to paint over.

The tapware in the kitchen and bathroom is another element that should be kept timeless. Consider using black, gunmetal, or stainless steel, which go with the majority of colour schemes and will help you save some money if you ever want to make any upgrades.

In the end, your house should be furnished with items and areas that bring you joy and showcase your unique style — ideally for many years to come.
